Self-fulfilling prophecy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (Redirected from Self fulfilling prophecy)Jump to: navigation, search
A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behavior. Although examples of such prophecies can be found in literature as far back as ancient Greece and ancient India, it is 20th-century sociologist Robert K. Merton who is credited with coining the expression "self-fulfilling prophecy" and formalizing its structure and consequences. In his book Social Theory and Social Structure, Merton gives as a feature of the self-fulfilling prophecy: Ie: when Roxanna falsely believes that her marriage will fail and fears such failure will occur that it actually causes the marriage to fail.
The self-fulfilling prophecy is, in the beginning, a false definition of the situation evoking a new behavior which makes the original false conception come 'true'. This specious validity of the self-fulfilling prophecy perpetuates a reign of error. For the prophet will cite the actual course of events as proof that he was right from the very beginning.[1]
In other words, a prophecy declared as truth when it is actually false may sufficiently influence people, either through fear or logical confusion, so that their reactions ultimately fulfill the once-false prophecy.
Self Fulfilling Prophecy in the BibleThe best example of this I can think of is Job. He stated the thing I feared the most has come among me. I believe that he feared that God would judge his family for not living as righteous as he was. He knew that God's wrath would bring about his demise and loss of the blessings.
Is what we think about and speak about our own lives a self fulfilling prophecy. I would have to say yes.
I find that if we just say what God's word says about us and really believe it then we will have what it says. the reason for this is simple we are setting into motion the power of agreement when we agree with God and take Him at His Word. The word is our reality, it is our blueprint, our inheritance. It is our existence our identity our mindset and provision and our prosperity.
The Bible states that if you believe with your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord then you will be saved. This passage lays out a pattern that we are to follow. If we believe what we speak it will happen.
There are a lot of people claiming to be "blessed" because it is the right thing to say but it is not a reality to them because they are basing it on a cliche' more than the Word.
